Hispanic Community

Our mission is to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ to all people through word, sacrament, service and community life. The Spanish community was created to meet the necessity of the faithful who don’t speak English and who are Catholic but have different traditions that are not celebrated in the English community. We have our own religious and liturgical traditions, such as: “all souls day” celebration on November 2nd, were we make altars for our beloved deceased; the “mananitas” mass and theatrical representation in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12th; the “posadas” that remembers when Mary and Joseph were looking for shelter during December before Christmas; then there is the “quinceanera”, which is a special celebration for girls on their fifteenth birthday. During Lent season, we have a three-day mission to help strengthen our faith and leadership. We also help out in the parish festival with the Mexican Food booth.

Our charismatic prayer group, Santa Maria de Guadalupe, have initiation retreats for people who have been away from the church or who have never come before. The group goes door to door to invite people to attend the retreat; and after the retreat, they continue their evangelization until they integrate them to our Spanish community and the different ministries. We also have our group, Mundo Nuevo, which promotes community weddings to those couples who have been living together and have children, but are not married by the Catholic Church. They also promote prayer groups in the apartment complexes so that people can start praying at home and later on join our community at the parish. We have Religious Education, where we prepare children for their first communion as well as adults to receive their sacraments of initiation. We also have pre-baptism classes for parents and godparents of the baby to be baptized. We have our Eucharistic ministers; lectors, hospitality ministers, adult and children altar servers and a choir to serve in our mass. We have a ministry to take communion to the sick.

Our community started with a mass in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe on the day of her feast, Dec 12th. This year is going to mark our 15th year anniversary. With the help of God, it will keep growing as it has been.

Faith doesn’t have a language, we don’t need to talk to feel and believe. We thank our Pastor, the parish staff, our English speaking community and our Vietnamese speaking community for all their support, so that we can be a part of the Saint Bonaventure family.

God Bless you all.
