Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Elijah encountered the Lord, not in the strong and heavy wind, not in the earthquake, not in the fire, but in the tiny whispering sound. (1 Kings 19:9-13)

Peter encountered the Lord Jesus, the Son of God become man, in many marvelous ways. In this Sunday’s Gospel (Matthew 14:22-33), Peter encountered him in the following way. The sea and wind were raging, but Jesus brought peace. Jesus walked on the sea toward his terrified disciples. They thought they were seeing a ghost. But it was Jesus, who cried out: “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” Peter replied, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” Jesus commanded, “Come.” Peter walked toward Jesus. As long as he focused on the Lord, Peter stayed on top of the water. But Peter let himself get distracted by the raging wind and sea and he began to drown. But then Peter cried out, “Lord, save me!” And Jesus stretched out his hand, caught Peter and said, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”

We are a lot like Peter. We want to follow Jesus with our whole heart and soul. But then things get scary. We stop focusing on Jesus our Savior and get caught up in the raging wind of illness, family turmoil, addictions, depression, doubts, and so much more. We feel we are drowning. But what we need to do, is what Peter did; don’t give up. With our whole heart and soul cry out, “Lord, save me!” And Jesus will stretch out his hand and catch us. He will lift us up. He will hold us in his strong and loving embrace. “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”

This is what I need to remember as I visit my dad in Wichita. He is in a long-term care nursing home. For several years he has suffered from Parkinson’s Disease. But his mind remained sharp. Now he is getting weaker and he’s not eating enough.

I have to do what I ask you to do, cry out to the Lord Jesus, “Lord, save me and my dad!”

Jesus, I need to hear you again, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”

Help me respond to you, “Truly, you are the Son of God.”
